‘The SouthCom is not a humanitarian institution. It’s a military intervention body,’ the Antifascist Movement recalled.

On Tuesday, Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of the United States Southern Command (SouthCom), arrived in Argentina to hold meetings with President Javier Milei, Defense Minister Luis Petri, and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Gen. Xavier Isaac.

His three-day visit is supposedly focused on strengthening regional security and long-term military collaboration between the U.S. and Argentina.

However, progressive social and political organizations immediately expressed their opposition to the SouthCom head’s presence. Among them was the Argentina Chapter of the International Antifascist Movement, whose public statement is presented below.

“We express our strongest rejection of the visit by Admiral Alvin Holsey, the head of the SouthCom, who has arrived in our country as part of an agenda that includes meetings with President Javier Milei and officials from the Defense Ministry. This visit represents an affront to national sovereignty and a threat to the self-determination of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Southern Command is not a diplomatic or humanitarian institution. It is a military intervention body that has historically been used to impose Washington’s geostrategic interests in the region. Its presence on our soil seeks to deepen interference in internal affairs, militarize strategic areas such as Ushuaia and the Triple Frontier, and consolidate alliances with governments aligned with U.S. imperialism.

Let us recall that on our Malvinas Islands there is a massive military base with 2,000 British troops, fighter jets, warships, missiles, and even a nuclear-capable submarine. From that military base, at NATO’s disposal, the Southern Command has conducted joint exercises with the British usurper.

We denounce the Argentine government for welcoming with honors someone who represents a military structure responsible for operations that have committed crimes in direct attacks on the self-determination of Latin American peoples, in alignment with the Trump administration. This visit is part of a series of actions that reveal the subordination of Argentina’s foreign policy to Washington’s dictates.

We warn that this visit is not an isolated event but part of a broader strategy of control and domination in Latin America, where the Southern Command acts as the armed wing of transnational capital, in collusion with far-right governments, intelligence agencies, and corporations dedicated to cognitive warfare and mass surveillance.

In response to this advance, we call on all social, political, union, feminist, farmer, and student organizations to remain alert and mobilized. We uphold the self-determination of the peoples, the defense of our sovereignty, and the construction of a homeland free from foreign military and economic interference.
